Brian Sutherland has been teaching Aikido for over 35 years– He began practicing Aikikai Aikido in 1974 and was teaching for federal law enforcement agencies within four years. Teaching U.S. Customs full time on the weekdays, and training each evening in Hapkido, Tang soo do, Karate and of course Aikido. Weekends were reserved for teaching YMCA classes, and more training. In 1978 he began instruction from Dr. Yoji Kondo, learning a new method of aikido as taught by Kenji Tomiki.  Brian was introduced to Judo shortly after and has been a dedicated student since. During the 1980’s he taught full time for multiple police agencies including the Federal Bureau of Prisons. This enabled Brian to travel nationwide visiting aikido and judo schools after teaching law enforcement defensive tactics each day.

He’s trained or taught martial arts in over 40 states, and has practiced / competed in Tokyo, Osaka, Tenri City, and Kyota Japan.

In 1978, Dr. Yoji Kondo moved to Columbia Maryland from Japan via Houston TX where he served as head of the astrophysics laboratory at NASA Johnson Space Center.  His style of aikido intrigued Brian.  Strikes, sweeps, chokes!...His aikido answered all of the "what if" questions.

Brian became one of Dr. Kondo's first students in Maryland.  He teaches with much knowledge, humor and sensitivity.  Dr. Kondo offers a lifetime of martial arts experience with judo being his first love.  Judo principles are extremely significant and intigrated into the aikido we practice as originally taught by Professor Kenji Tomiki.
